My son passed his driving test this year after many months of lessons and revising for the dreaded written test . it use to be so easy , few lessons learn a bit of the highway code and you scraped through the test, Now its a major written exam , ok its multi-choice but you have to get something like 48 out of 55 questions right , i have been driving for 27 years and only managed to score 39 . Anyway a quick trip to argos , to buy the “pass your test” dvd and we spent the next four days revising the questions , there are something like 6000 different questions . eventually he took his test and passed …horray , thats it we thought lets buy the car and get on the road ..
My son had looked at various cars and started to get some quotes for insurance , the first one came back for a group 1 fiat uno , at £2478……. the car is costing £750 and they want HOW MUCH !!!!!!! must be something wrong i mean my 3.0 bmw worth ten times as much costs me £300 for the year surely something must be wrong . I decide to try the go compare website they come back with best price £2125 still unbelievable how can any 17 year old afford to drive!!!!!
We asked about with friends and family , get a quote with him as second driver they said , i tried this guess what my policy would shoot up to £2400 that loop hole as obviously been closed . Now if he was a girl I can quotes of about £1000 less , how does that work , but there again after seeing all the boy racers flying up the village i suppose i understand ….
Anyway i am told of cheap insurance using classic car insurance ??, i look on the website of footman James they have a policy it says from 18 year old plus but i decide to ring up anyway , I ask about a classic mini , the car has to be over 15 years old, he can have a policy at 17 , but it is a limited milage policy of 3000 miles , and it comes to £900 ..amazing , so now hes driving at last, in a 1993 rover mini
Takes me right back to my Youth , my first car was a Cortina mk2 , frightening when i think of my insurance cost me £67 …and the car cost £40 …oh happy days ..
