4×4 trucks have long been very popular, but if you are watching your wallet you may be wondering if they are worth the extra cost over the 4×2. Is the 4×4 truck really better than the 4×2 truck, or is just a hyped up way for car manufacturers to make more money?
Inclement Weather
In areas of bad weather, many 4×4 truck owners report that they couldn’t live without their four wheel drive. The 4×4 generally has better traction and ground clearance than a 4×2. While using the four wheel drive usually isn’t often necessary, many people find it a lifesaver the one or two times that they need to use it. If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow, you may see the wisdom in getting a 4×4 over a 4×2. In fact, most car dealers in winter weather areas only stock 4×4 trucks for sale.
Lifting and Towing Uses
Do you plan on installing a lift kit on your truck? If so, you probably want a 4×4. If you look at used lifted trucks for sale, you wiIl notice that most of them are 4x4s, simply because they offer more durability and stability when lifted. Additionally, if you want a truck for towing, the 4×4 is a better bet. 4×2 trucks are adequate for occasional towing, but if you have a boat or a trailer that you plan on taking out every weekend it is probably best to get a 4×4 truck.
4×4 Isn’t Always Best
There are many times when the 4×2 performs just as well as the 4×4. In fact, unless you live in an area with a lot of snow or you will be regularly towing something, you will find that the 4×2 is more than adequate. With a slight modification such as larger tires, the 4×2 is as durable as the 4×4. Furthermore, 4×2 trucks are less expensive and get better gas mileage than their 4×4 companions.
Many 4×4 truck owners compare their vehicle to a life insurance policy – they seldom need to use the four wheel drive, but the peace of mind of having it is worth its weight in gold. There are certainly some situations such as towing and inclement weather where the 4×4 truck outperforms the 4×2, but others where there is really no difference between the two vehicles. Take into account your personal uses and situation before you decide which truck is best for you.
