One of the things about being a country car buff, is that you never know when one might appear. It’s like being a gold miner, and then suddenly you find a nugget of a vehicle. Yaaa-hoo! Just like the gold miners, we in the car sport, have hours and then days of boring time when nothing -absolutely nothing- happens. Talk about boring!
But then it happens- some ole car bumbles by to delight us. It’s like Heaven. A great value to the soul.
It happened to me yesterday. I had gone to a Sunday morning breakfast at the beach with some people from work.
What to my wondering car-appreciating eyes would appear, but a 1939 Ford pickup. Truly an amazing spectacle. It was not a classic restoration by any means, nor had the owner taken it the full hot rod route. Nonetheless, what a beauty.
The color and finish was a deep, lustrous, metal flake Maui blue with a clear coat finish. The full oval front grill was nicely chromed, as was the molding on the horizontal vents on both of the sides, just there below the hood line. The divided windshield was outlined in pristine chrome, as were the tiny wipers above each side of the windshield. Sweet!
Unbelievably, it had the original bumpers and the two dual rear view mirrors. These too were also gorgeous in a spotless chrome.
The owner went with large moon chrome hubcaps. He told me he’d considered full chrome, or even chrome plates on the running boards, even additional lake pipes, but had decided that would be a little too much, going the hot rod route. Instead, he opted for good value automotive accessories, and also carried the uni-color Maui blue all the way around. I had to agree it was a more tasteful look. Very classic, and not flamboyantly overstated.
So that was my moment of auto madness and delight. It was so very cool to see. Now, I’ll chill, and be waiting for my next aged old vehicle to drive by.
