Winter will soon be here, and my ford cortina mk11 will soon be put away for the winter, If you are thinking of storing your classic car into long term storage there are a few things you must do to keep the car looking great , so that it will hold its market value. Its important to prepare the body work and interior for long term storage , we all know classic cars that don’t move and are inactive will start to deteriorate if they are not prepared properly before hand
The most important bit whether you own a classic or any vehicle going into storage is to give it a complete clean , I don’t mean a quick wash but you must spend a good few days , getting every part immaculate , wash off all the grime and salt especially from underneath and any exposed body parts
One really important thing you must do is to making sure that every inch of the vehicle is completely dry. This must be done before wrapping the covers around it and putting the car into storage. When you choose a cover make sure it is decent quality blanket made from super soft fibres, and don’t forget you should always store your classic out of sunlight and in a dust free area.
It is always a good idea to drain the fluids especially if planning to store for a long time, leave the caps off and let the air circulate round the cooling system
During washing of the body work spend some time looking for scratches and chips in the paint , its always a good idea to touch up any small spots at this time rather than letting the corrosion eat away at it all winter remember to use a primer when touching up as this will prevent the rust coming back once the paint has been treated give the car a really good waxing with an expensive polish , auto glym is a good choice , them wrap it up , don’t forget to store it in a damp free slightly heated garage, then set the alarm clock for next spring ….time to get the catalogue out and see what extras i can buy it for christmas
